How does it work?

AirTag transmits a secure Bluetooth signal. Nearby devices connected to the Find service network will capture the signal and report the location of your AirTag to iCloud. You will then see it on the map in the Find application. The entire process is anonymous and encrypted, protecting the privacy of all involved. In addition, it is economical, so you don’t have to worry about battery or data limits.

The lost device mode will make it easier for you to find it.

Like other Apple devices, the AirTag can be put into lost device mode. When another device connected to the network registers it, it will automatically alert you. Or you can set it up so that finders see your contact information when they hold the AirTag to a smartphone with NFC – the same technology that allows you to pay with your mobile.

It’s your private business.

Only you can see the location of your AirTag. Your location data and its history are not stored in the AirTag itself. Devices that report AirTag location to you also remain anonymous. All location data is encrypted at all stages of transmission, so even Apple won’t know the location of your AirTag or the identity of the device that helped locate it.

AirTag is designed to discourage unwanted tracking. When a stranger’s AirTag gets tangled up in your things, your iPhone will notice it and notify you about it. If you don’t find it even after a while, a sound will start playing on the foreign AirTag to reveal it.
